NC/DC Day 4

Day 4, June 11
We started our day off with a little walk to the White House from our dorm rooms! This was really neat for all of us. We took lots of pictures, talked about the White House. We played a few group games in the park in front of the White House, while waiting for the Metro tickets to arrive.

We rode the Metro (always exciting with students), to the Smithsonian museums. We gave them a couple of hours at the museums and then met to walk to lunch. They all went their seperate ways, heading to the American History Museum, Air and Space and Natural History!

Lunch was fun. They got to choose a variety at the food court and then have a scoop of ice cream from Ben and Jerry's. Many of them took advantage of this time to ride the elevator to the top of the Old Post Office Pavilion. This is one of the best views of the city.

Following lunch, we headed towards the Capitol building for a tour. Tours are now being done through the new Capitol Vistors Center. They start with a video, and then move on to the guided walking tour. While not nearly as entertaining as the tours that used to be given by senate interns, this one was more educational and informative.

After the tour, we hopped on the metro and headed for Union Station. We gave the students their dinner vouchers and let them explore the shopping area in Union Station. Union Station, as well as being a metro stop and the central train station for DC, has massive food court and shopping center. The students had a great time eating and just spending time there.

Following dinner, we headed back across the city to our dorm rooms. We had a few hours before the students had lights out, so we broke out the playing cards, movies and other games. The students seperated off into the groups and enjoyed the evenings activities. I think everyone was exhausted by the times lights out rolled around. It had been a busy four days!
