NC/DC Day 2

Day 2, June 9
Our second day was very busy! We had two campus tours, a visit to the Beach, and a drive to Williamsburg, VA! So, we started early, with breakfast in the dorm! We then had a tour of University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The weather in North Carolina was a huge change for the Colorado kids! We are definitely not used to the humid, hot temperatures they get out there! But the campus was beautiful just the same.

The students also received an informational session from admission about the school and what it takes to attend! Many students used a few minutes of free time to head to the bookstore and purchase souvenirs.
It was then on to Duke University, a quick 3o minute drive away. At Duke, we split off into two groups and received tours from their Undergraduate Admissions office. The tour guides were students at Duke, and provided some great insight into the campus there.
We were able to see many of the historic buildings on campus, as well as Duke Chapel and Krzyzewskiville Arena, where all the Duke basketball games are held. The students had a quick lunch in the student center, along with a trip to the bookstore for more souvenirs!

After lunch, we hopped onto the bus and headed toward the coast. We were all hoping it would be a little cooler in Virginia Beach! On the drive, we ran into quite the rainstorm. This delayed our arrival in Virginia Beach by a couple of hours. The road crews were impressive in the ability to quickly clean up the fallen trees.
Virginia Beach was definitely cooler! The rain had brought cooler temperatures and a cloudy but very pretty evening to the area. The students had about an hour after dinner to go explore the beach and the boardwalk area. It was a little chilly to swim, but many took the opportunity to wade into the waves.

Leaving Virginia Beach was difficult, but we were all excited to continue on to Williamsburg and visit the hisotric town of Colonial Williamsburg. We got to drive underneath Chesapeke Bay. This portion of the waterway is used to transport the large Navy and Coast Guard vessels, so the road way was moved underground. We spent the night at College of William and Mary. This school has had such famous students as Thomas Jefferson and Jon Stewart! Our students had some excitement with a visit from a couple of cockroaches in the bathrooms on their floors.
